Spinning tires in the water box?

Why do people spin their tires in the water box?  Is this a monkey see-monkey do kind of thing?  Is there some benefit to this other then slinging water into the wheel wells?

What ever happened to good O'le Bleach? I remember when I first went to LVD (2003) with the front wheel drive car, the old school guys would'nt even look at me and even moaned and groaned because the "front wheel" drive car was draging water out of the water box. Get a life you old school bastards! You know what, they did . . . Lol

always thought you did a burnout to heat the tires up?  and what do you mean easier on tires,   doesnt pulling through the water and out of the box, before doing the burnout, still get the tires wet without slingin water everywhere?

it easyer on tires and does not over heat tires thats my 2 cents

I usually have someone back me into the box,  enough to run the tires in the water,   not spinning them,  and pull me out of the water plus about 1-2ft,  then do the burnout,   blipping the throttle in the water to get the tires wet,  then pulling out of the water is just the same.    And if no one is with me at the line,  the starter backs me up,  and then pulls me out of the box,   My local track gets very pissed if you spin your tires in the water at all,    maybe thats why the track hooks so hard,   no dripping water!

I think it's honestly the responsibility of the starter at the track. At Lebanon, I rely on them to guide me up to and thru the water box. even then I pull 5 ft or so ahead before doing my burnout. Like Jim says does nothing but fill your car with debris and water......

Local track here even has a big sign at the starting line to not spin the tires in the water box,  but people still do it,  dripping water all over the track.   Just curious as to why people do it,   seems to be only guys/girls running brackets.
